A method and an apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device are provided to reduce fatigue of user eyes by preventing a flicker due to an abrupt variation of an external luminance. An apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device includes an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) module(100), a light sensing portion(130), a backlight unit(120) and a sensitivity controller(112). The LCD module adjusts optical transmissivity and displays an image. The light sensing portion detects a peripheral luminance of the LCD module and generates a light sensor signal. The backlight unit generates light according to the light sensor signal and illuminates the generated light on the LCD module. The sensitivity controller adjusts the sensitivity of the light sensing portion. |
