The system (10) has a displacement unit (23) located between cog wheels for displacing branches (20, 22) of a transmission unit e.g. belt, according to a transverse axis (Y) parallel to a plane defined by the cogwheels and orthogonal to a plane passing through axes of a crankshaft or a cam shaft. An additional spacing unit (24) allows the branches of the transmission unit to be spaced from each other at length (L). The length between the branches is maintained during displacement of the branches. The spacing unit includes diametrically opposite ends in constant contact with the branches.
