A lock device for a vehicle door is obtained. The lock device has a structure which, only when preparatory operation is performed before a handle provided to a door or the like is operated, activates unlocking operation performed by the handle, and the lock device uses a reduced number of parts to make the lock device compact. A lock device for a vehicle door is provided with: an unlocking lever (59) which rotates between a lock holding position and an unlocking position depending on the operation of a handle member (13) and which is not in contact with a pawl (40); a slide-type opening lever (74) which is supported by the unlocking lever so as to be capable of sliding between a no-action position and an action position, the no-action position being a position at which the slide-type opening lever (74) is separated from the pawl, the action position being a position at which the slide-type opening lever (74) presses the pawl to a non-engagement position when the unlocking lever has moved to the unlocking position; and a cancel lever (99) which, depending on the operation of a cancel lever operation means (83), rotates to a cancel position at which the slide-type opening lever is positioned at the no-action position and to a cancel release position at which the slide-type opening lever is positioned at the action position.
