The method involves stepwise activation of safety measures depending on a determined criticality of detected driving conditions. A collision probability is determined in a stage by a pedestrian (3) detected by an environment sensor system using detected signals of the environment sensor system. A warning to a driver of a vehicle (1) is outputted during existing of collision probability, and motor torque of a drive unit of the vehicle is automatically reduced. The safety measures are positioning a driver on a vehicle seat and/or control of a belt tensioner. An independent claim is also included for a safety device.
