The method involves serially connecting a set of conversion units (2), and guiding a gaseous working medium i.e. water vapor, through the conversion units. The medium is conducted from an upper end region of a container (3) of one of the conversion units into a lower end region of another container of the adjacent conversion unit such that the working medium is raised in the containers. Pressure in the containers is regulated such that pressure at an outlet (5) of the former container is higher than pressure in the lower end region of the former container. An independent claim is also included for a device for converting thermal energy into mechanical energy.
