The method involves directing a knocking combustion to an injector in a combustion chamber of the combustion engine till a predetermined knock intensity threshold (40) is initiated and is held for a defined time period for separation of deposits causal for particulate emissions. The knock intensity threshold is increased against a knock tolerance limit defined for a knock regulation. The defined time duration is selected to be short relative to the operating duration of the internal combustion engine. An independent claim is included for a regulating unit for reducing particulate emissions during operation of a combustion engine.
