<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an engine torque approximately equal to that given in the lowland stall starting, even when the engine is started in the highland stall starting where the air density is low. <P>SOLUTION: The highland stall starting conditions are determined (S2), and if a determination of highland stall starting is passed, the target engine speed at highland stall starting STLEG is set (S6) on the basis of the stall torque ratio of a torque converter 2 and the oil temperature in an automatic transmission 3.
