The exhaust gas sensor (10) has a thermocouple (14) which is surrounded by a steel protective sheath (16). The protective sheath is provided with a passage opening (24) over which the exhaust gas is passed. The passage opening includes a flow cross-section area which is tapered towards the thermocouple. An air gap (20) is formed between the thermocouple and protective sheath.
