[Problem] A polarizer and a polarizing plate having improved optical properties and durability. [Solution] A polarizer is characterized in being formed from a polyvinyl alcohol resin film that has been stretched after adsorbing at least one type of dichroic pigment selected from the compound represented by formula (I), a salt thereof, and a transition metal complex thereof, wherein the degree of polymerization of the polyvinyl alcohol resin film is between 5,000 and 10,000. (In the formula, A is a nitro or amino group; R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrogen atom, hydroxyl group, lower alkyl group, lower alkoxy group, sulfo group, or lower alkoxy group having sulfo groups; and X is an optionally substituted benzoylamino group, optionally substituted phenylamino group, optionally substituted phenylazo group, or optionally substituted naphthotriazole group, where the substitution groups are selected from lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, sulfo, amino, and substituted amino groups.) |
