The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for performing a trigger for a machine-type communication (MTC) device under network congestion/overload conditions. The method for performing the trigger for the MTC device according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: receiving, from an MTC server, a trigger request message requesting the trigger for the MTC device; checking whether or not information for distinguishing an immediate trigger request is included in the trigger request message; and transmitting the trigger request message to the MTC device according to whether or not the information for distinguishing the immediate trigger request is included.
