The engine (1) has identical cylinder heads including upper-lying camshafts (3, 3') and attached to V-type cylinder rows (2, 2'), respectively. The cylinder heads are rotated to each other on a cover. A counter shaft (5) driven by a crank shaft (4) is provided at front sides of the engine for driving the camshafts. The camshafts are driven over gearboxes (6, 6') such as traction drives e.g. chain drive and belt drive, and pinion gears, by the counter shaft. The counter shaft is formed as a balancing shaft that is driven parallel to the crank shaft with crank shaft rotational speed.
