<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To copy management information shared between a RAID controller and a controller of an image processor to mirroring information in HDDs to properly determine whether the HDDs are normal through comparison between the shared management information and the mirroring information, thereby enabling stable management and operation of the HDDs. <P>SOLUTION: Management information is recorded in shared management information areas 23 and 53 of HDDs 20 and 50 at start-up of a multifunction machine. A RAID controller 42 copies the management information stored in the shared management information areas to mirroring information areas 22 and 52. The RAID controller 42 compares information in the mirroring information areas 22 and 52 of the HDDs 20 and 50, respectively, and the management information in the shared management information areas 23 and 53 at start-up of the multifunction machine. When content of the information matches each other, the multifunction machine is normally started. When the content does not match each other, one of the HDDs is determined to have past use history.
