[Also in Division H2] A rotary shaft 2, for example, the rotor of an electric motor is supported in a rigid frame 1 by a thrust bearing at one end of the shaft, and at the other end by a journal bearing comprising a cylindrical recess 6 in a stationary member 5 accommodating the end of the shaft 4. One of the bearing surfaces is provided with shallow spiral grooves 9 for urging lubricant, on rotation of the shaft to the closed end of the recess. An annular lubricant storage chamber 8 is provided on the shaft and sealing grooves 10 are provided to prevent escape of lubricant. The stationary member 5 may be a self-aligning bust which is held in the frame by a resilient member 7. The thrust bearing for the shaft is a conical spiral groove bearing (Fig. 1), a spiral groove thrust bearing or a deep groove ball bearing (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown).</p> |
