Provided is a system enabling easy acquisition of information about the area around a place at which information is wanted. An information providing method is used for a system including a portable terminal (60) having an Internet communication function and a noncontact IC chip, a first reader/writer terminal (40) installed at a predetermined place and capable of transmitting a first place specifier relating to resources containing information about the neighborhood of the installation place, a communication means (101) capable of communicating with the portable terminal (60) over the Internet, a storage means (105) storing the resources containing the information about the neighborhood of the place at which the first reader/writer terminal (40) is installed, and a control means for controlling the communication means and the storage means. The information providing method is characterized by including a first place specifier transmitting step (S2) of allowing the first reader/writer terminal (40) to transmit the first place specifier to the portable terminal (60) when the first reader/writer terminal (40) detects the approach of the portable terminal (60)(S1), a first place specifier receiving step (S3) of allowing the communication means to receive the first place specifier from the portable terminal (60) through the Internet communication, and a neighborhood information resource transmitting step (S4) of allowing the control means to read the neighborhood information resources specified by the first place specifier from the storage means (105) and to transmit the neighborhood information resources from the communication means to the portable terminal (60) through the Internet communication. |
