According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an efficient method of computing synthetic wavefields. In the preferred arrangement, wavefields are computed by means of the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) by increasing the number of degrees of freedom to be greater than the order of the lattice. This new degree of freedom is referred to as colour. Thus, particles in the present invention are fully defined by position, speed, direction and colour. In a second aspect, the present invention is used to image seismic or electromagnetic wavefield data through forward propagating and back propagating source and receiver wavefields followed by applying an imaging condition. In a third aspect, the present invention is used to invert seismic or electromagnetic wavefield data through an iterative scheme where the difference between modelled and recorded data is minimized by updating an Earth model until the misfit is sufficiently small. The invention is not limited to be applicable to only certain classes of sub-surface material and can be used in Poisson solids. |
