[Also in Division E2] A hollow member having a ball at one end thereof has a varying wall thickness along its length, the wall thickness increasing proportionally as the outer diameter of the member is reduced. The member is produced from a tubular member 8 by shaping by means of profiled rollers 18 acting on the outer surface of the tube. A profiled roller 19 may also act simultaneously on the inner surface of the tube. Jumping-up heads may also act on the ends of the tube, or a jumping-up operation in a twopart swaging die may be carried out on the tube prior to shaping by profiled rollers. The base of the cavity within the ball of the hollow member may be rendered watertight by a plug or by constriction. |
