A rotary piston engine comprises a rotor 3 having a rotor body 17 and a rotor element 7 movably mounted to the rotor body. The engine further comprises a stator 1 having a stator body 15 and a stator element 5 movably mounted to the stator body. The rotor is rotatably mounted relative to the stator such that, as the rotor rotates, the rotor element and the stator element move relative to each other and form a combustion chamber in a sealed cavity 13. The rotor and stator elements may move, relative to the rotor and stator respectively, when the elements are engaged with each other, each movement being effected by a cam arrangement. A plurality of rotor and stator elements may be provided at a plurality of radial distances. The rotor and stator may each be a ceramic disc.
