Apparatus for discharging molten A2 from one or more electrolysis furnaces comprises a gantry 8 straddling. a furnace 1 and running longitudinally thereof on rails 7, a ladle 19 in each limb of the gantry suspended from a carriage 15 moving downwardly and inwardly of the furnace on guide rails 14, said gantry 8 being also movable transversely at the end of the furnace on wheels 11 which may be raised or lowered by jacks 13. Each side of the gantry comprises a U-shaped frame structure with a driving wheel or logic unit 9 on each leg drive by a motor 10 on the rails 7. Lowering of wheels 11 on to their rails lifts the gantry off rails 7. Each gantry leg also has a pivoted crust breaker 23 driven by a jack 24 and a conduit 21 on the ladle 19 enters the hole formed by the crust breaker. The ladle carriages 15 are supported on wheels 16 and driven by a motor 17 through a screw-threaded rod 18. The ladle suspension incorporates a weighing device 20. Hydraulic pump 27 driven by a diesel engine 26 provides power for the motors and jacks and a pneumatic pump 28 provides suction or pressure for the ladles 19 whereby molten metal is drawn from the furnace through conduit 21 or expelled from the ladle through conduit 22. Action of the apparatus and movement of the gantry can be controlled automatically by a programmer.</p> |
