Polyamides are prepared by polymerising (a) a monoaminomonocarboxylic acid or a derived lactam, with at least 2 C atoms between the NH2 and COOH groups, or (b) practically equimolar amounts of a diamine with at least 2 C atoms between the NH2 groups, and a dicarboxylic acid with at least 2 C atoms between the COOH groups; in the presence of (c) 0.1-5.0 mol.% (based on the mol. wt. of the repeating units of the polyamide chain) of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of a phosphonic acid of formula (I):- (where R1 = a mono, di, or trifunctional organic group; and n = 1, 2 or 3).
