Improved method for opt. substd. I Steroid intermediates R = a steroidal side chain Rings AB= M. phlei is grown in a suitable medium (e.g. 12-20g corn-steep liquor, 10g. glucose, tap water to 1 I.) for 48 h. at 37 deg. in shake flasks (300 r.p.m.) or in a vat (250 r.p.m.) with 1 vol. air/1./min., stood to sediment out the cells, and the medium replaced by 0.4 % NaCl solution. II and 8-hydroxyquinoline added in EtOH,Me2CO, or dioxan solution, inculated ca. 48h. at 37 deg., the production of I being monitored by paper chromat./U.V., filtered, extd. with CCl4 to obtain I. The cell culture can be used a second time.
