An actuating apparatus for a swivel window of a vehicle, in which the window is capable of being swivelled by a rotary element actuated from the interior of the vehicle and connected to the swivel window through a self-locking step-up gear, is characterised in that the stepup gear provides a definite association, as regards angle of rotation, between the position of the rotary element and the position of the window only within a limited angular displacement of the window from its closed position; outside this range, the window is connected to the rotary element through a slip coupling or catch coupling whose power is such that it may be overcome manually. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the step-up gear comprises a worm 14, a first pinion 42 connected integrally to an axle stub 26 and having only two teeth 44, 46, and a second pinion 50 which has teeth all round and is permanently in mesh with the worm 14. Two plate springs 52 are positioned on an axle stub 48 and abut the bottom end face 54 of the pinion 50 and a cotter 56. The slip coupling is constituted by the abutting faces 58, 60 of the pinions 42, 50. Rotating the handwheel 20 causes the teeth 44, 46 of the first pinion 42 to rotate the axle 26 and window. 34. When the handwheel 20 is rotated further, the teeth 44, 46 move out of engagement with the worm 14 and from this position onwards the window 34 may be rotated by gripping it directly since the slip coupling allows movement of the first pinion 42 with respect to the second pinion 50. Fine adjustment by rotating the handwheel still remains possible because the second pinion 50 is permanently in engagment with the worm 14. The slip coupling may be replaced by a catch coupling in which one of the pinions contains a bore out of which a locking element, preferably a ball, can be partially urged and into depressions e.g. the tooth gaps, in the end face of the other pinion. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) a single pinion (76) having at its top end face a cam surface (80) cooperating with a cam surface (82) on the housing 10, is slidably mounted on a bearing axis (84) and is connected to said bearing axis by a slip coupling. The bearing axis possesses a lug (86) which extends into a recess (88) in the pinion, thus giving a positive connection between the pinion and bearing axis (84). After rotation of the pinion beyond a given angle, the cam surface (80) strikes against cam surface (82) forcing the pinion down against the action of a spring (98) so that the positive connection between the lug (86) and recess (88) is cancelled and the axle (26) becomes capable of free rotation.
