The domestic appliance (2) has a device housing (5) with an opening (6), over which the material is inserted in an inner space of the domestic appliance. A cover (8) for closing the opening is movably mounted at the device housing. A sensor (9) generates a status signal (11) which includes information about the state of the cover. A receiving unit (10) receives the status signal. The sensor comprises an electrical pressure change element to which an electrical voltage is tapped and the status signal is generated depending on the electrical voltage. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a domestic appliance.
