[Also in Division H1] An analogue to digital encoder for encoding shaft angle positions comprises a code disc 12 mechanically affixed to the shaft 10 whose rotational position is to be encoded, this disc having unique combinations of opaque and transparent sectors disposed on spaced radii, a fixed light source 20 being positioned on one side of the disc and a photo-cell assembly 22 on the other side. The light source projects light through the transparent sectors 16 of the disc in combinations depending upon the rotational position of the shaft and disc to actuate corresponding photo-voltaic cells in the photo-cell assembly. The light source may be periodically actuated or continuous, and the photo-cells themselves may be periodically sampled. |
