A storage pile or stack of wood chips protected against cellulosic decomposition is obtained by treatment of the wood chips with a nickel compound, e.g. a chloride, sulphate, nitrate, carbonate, cyanide, arsenate, ammonium sulphate, oleate, or a complex containing Cu, Sn or Mn, preferably in solution in a polar solvent. Other fungicides which may be present are cresol, pentachlorophenol, sodium pentachlorophenate, mercury chloride, copper sulphate and chromium/arsenic complex salts. A polyglycol stabilizer also may be present.
