A communication system includes a base node and peripheral node each having sets of complementary radios for transmitting and receiving signals to achieve high reliability and reduced costs. The sets of complementary radios are in wireless communication with each other. A new connection is made by selecting from amongst the complementary radios. Switching between complementary radios during a connection is also permitted. Switching is based on one or more performance objectives such as quality, maximum reliability, minimum interference and minimum power consumption. One radio may be a UWB radio while another may be a narrowband radio using WiFi, Bluetooth or Zigbee protocols. Switching may also occur based on distance. Also disclosed is reconfigurable hardware for implementing the system. |
