In a venturi-scrubber having a convergent section preceding an adjustable throat-section sheets of liquid are introduced above the convergent section into the gas to be scrubbed and in the direction of flow thereof, the throat section comprising pairs of opposed stretchable sheets, one pair 64a and 64b of which is associated with opposed, parallel channel members 84 and 96 movable equidistantly towards and away from each other to vary the crosssectional area of the throat section. The movement of the members 94 and 96 may 'be hand- or power-operated. In a modification the throat section comprises a pair of hinged baffles 218 and 220 (Fig. 72) which are moved to vary the crosssectional area of the throat section.
