A radial ply tyre has in at least one of its sidewalls 12 a continuous ornamental rectangular cross-sectioned band 13 of a lighter coloured elastomer than that of the sidewall, the flexing and stressing of the band 13 under load being reduced by the provision of a pair of continuous circumferential grooves 16, 16A flanking the band and by disposing the band wholly below the surface of the sidewall. The tyre is manufactured by producing a groove 20 in the sidewall by grinding, adhesively securing the band 13 in the groove 20 and grinding grooves 16 and 16A at the edges of groove 20 so that there is a simultaneous removal of material from both sidewall and band. Alternatively the band 13 can be adherred to the sidewall prior to vulcanization of the tyre and subjecting the assembly to vulcanization in a mould shaped to produce the required configuration. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the band has a T-shaped cross-section.
