[Also in Divisions A4 and F2] In a method of securing a ventilator or like fitting 10 having a neck 11 and head 12 to an article of upholstery 21 by a washer 16 having at least one tongue 17 at the side of an aperture therein for engaging the neck 11. the fitting 10 and washer 16 are severed from bands of fittings and washers, the severed fitting 10 and washer 16 are guided to opposite sides of the article 21 and the neck 11 is passed through a preformed hole in the article 21 and into the aperture in the washer 16. A ventilator fitting is secured to a mattress border 21 by first lowering a die 36 on to the border 21 by a pneumatic piston and cylinder unit. A piston 29 connected to an inner punch 28 is urged upwards in a cylinder 26 by a spring 33 so that the punch 28 may pierce a rectangular hole in the border 21, the plug being discharged through the die 36. The die 36 is raised to allow a band of nylon fittings 10 to be fed forward by teeth 40 on pneumatically reciprocable slides 39 so as to feed the end fitting 10 into the die 36. The flanges 12 of the band are engaged by a spring-loaded plate 41 having teeth 42 to prevent reverse movement of the band. The cylinder 26 connected to a punch 24 is raised in a cylinder 31 by a spring to cause the punch 24 to sever a metal washer 16 from its band and engage it with the border 21. The punch 28 is simultaneously raised through the tubular neck 11 of the fitting 10, which is severed from its band by a pneumatically operated cutter (44) (Fig. 10, not shown), whereupon the die 36 is lowered to carry the fitting 10 over the punch 28 and force its neck through the hole in the border 21 and between the tongues 17 of the washer 16. The punches 24, 28 are moved downwards into their initial position by applying a vacuum to the cylinders 26, 31 below the respective pistons. The underside of the flange 12 may have teeth (19) (Fig. 1, not shown), for gripping the border 21. |
