PURPOSE: A method for determining sleep mode time and switch between an activation mode and a sleep mode in a home gateway environment is provided to maximize energy conservation by increasing sleep mode time. CONSTITUTION: When traffic is non-real time traffic(260), buffer time is compared to a buffer threshold value(270). When the amount of the traffic is over the buffer threshold value, the home gateway is converted into an activation mode(310). The home gateway directly processes the traffic of buffer. When the home gateway maintains a sleep mode, a user determines a QoE(Quality of Experience) value indicated by a user(280).
