PURPOSE: A portable terminal and a locking release method thereof are provided to offer a direct and convenient UI(User Interface) by releasing a screen lock state based on a motion by measuring the motion of a terminal through a motion measuring sensor. CONSTITUTION: A motion measuring unit(110) senses the first motion pattern of a terminal, and a motion pattern storage unit(120) stores a second motion pattern including two motions for the terminal. When the first motion pattern is matched with the second motion pattern, a control unit(130) releases the screen lock state of the terminal. An image execution unit(160) displays an image for releasing the screen lock state of the terminal on a touch screen. When the response signal is received through the touch screen corresponding to the image, the control unit measures the motion of the terminal.
