To securely draw out a thread from a middle presser by a wiper without adversely affecting the quality of stitches or sewing workability. A sewing machine (M) is provided with a middle presser (29) which holds down an object to be sewn against a needle plate when drawing out a sewing needle (1), the wiper (205) which draws out a thread (T) inserted into the middle presser (29) across a space between the sewing needle (1) and the middle presser (29) after the thread (T) is cut when the sewing is completed, a driving device (42) which moves the middle presser (29) vertically synchronously with the vertical movement of the sewing needle (1), and a drive controlling means which controls the driving device (42) so that it lowers the middle presser (29) to a prescribed height from the needle plate between the time when the sewing of the last stitch starts and the time when the wiper (205) starts to move. |
