The battery management system (5) has a main portion that is connected with a lithium ion battery (1) through an internal current sensor (11). The battery is connected with a consumer (2) and/or the load components (3,4) through the current sensors (12-14). The current sensors are arranged for monitoring the charging current of the battery.
