摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool in which the hard coating layer demonstrates excellent chipping resistance and deficit resistance in the high speed intermittent cutting work of a hard-to-cut material of stainless steel or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool is such that a hard coating layer includes: (a) a lower part layer consisting of a Ti compound layer having 3-20 &mu;m of a total average layer thickness; (b) an intermediate layer consisting of an aluminum oxide layer having 1-15 &mu;m of an average layer thickness; (c) and a top layer consisting of a modified Ti carbonitride layer having an oblong growth crystal structure having 5-16 &mu;m of an average layer thickness, and the hard coating layer of the (a), (b) and (c) is formed on the surface of the tool body by chemical vapor deposition, wherein (d) the modified Ti carbonitride layer composing the top layer includes at least one oxygen and Zr concentrate region in which the peak of an oxygen content appears along a layer thickness direction at 0.5-4.0 &mu;m intervals, the oxygen content amount O<SB POS="POST">MAX</SB>in the peak position is O<SB POS="POST">MAX</SB>=3-8 at.%, and moreover, the Zr content in the position is 0.8-1.5 at.%. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
