An optical rotary joint and methods of use for providing an optical path between stationary and rotating components includes a hollow drive shaft adapted to accommodate the optical path. A stationary collimating lens is disposed in the optical path outside a proximal end of the hollow drive shaft and a rotating collimating lens is attached to the hollow drive shaft and disposed in the optical path outside a distal end of the hollow drive shaft.
