The heat accumulator (1) has a storage core (2), an outer cover (4) surrounding the storage core to form an insulating chamber (3) at a distance and a coupling element (9), by which the storage core is held in the insulation chamber. A radiation shield (20) is arranged in the insulating chamber. The radiation shield is arranged at a distance from the storage core and to the outer cover by a holding element (21). The holding element is connected with the storage core or with the outer cover. An independent claim is included for a method for storing thermal energy by a heat accumulator.
