PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining an increased risk of mortality or of a cardiac and/or vascular event in a patient.

SOLUTION: The method comprises determining the sPLA2 activity of the patient and comparing, and comparing the activity to a predetermined value, a higher sPLA2 activity of the patient as compared to the predetermined value is indicative of an increased risk of mortality or of a cardiac and/or vascular event.
