The method involves calculating a route for a target position, and determining available residual energy amount for driving a vehicle (1). Computed energy amount for driving of computed residual route is calculated based on a standard speed profile. An automatic speed control is activated when the difference of the available residual energy amount and the calculated energy amount falls below a threshold value for automatically regulating energy supply for driving the vehicle such that energy consumption for driving the vehicle during navigated speed is smaller than during the profile. An independent claim is also included for an automatic speed controlling device for driving a vehicle.
