The system has a hydraulic pump (1) for delivering a drive fluid with specific delivery flow rate and specific fluid pressure (Pist). A control unit (8) switches on or off the pump to set a predefined setpoint value (Psoll) of the fluid pressure. The pump exhibits an inertia-induced overrun when the pump is switched off. The control unit switches-off the pump before the fluid pressure reaches the setpoint value. The control unit switches-on the pump before the fluid pressure falls below the setpoint value. The pump is driven an electromotor (2). The drive fluid is hydraulic oil. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a pressure medium system.
