<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for centering an automatic tool changing apparatus which can improve the workability of a centering operation on an ATC arm, and to provide a tool for centering the automatic tool changing apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The method for centering the automatic tool changing apparatus includes steps for: providing a fiber sensor 5 in a tool body; gripping the tool body by a tool gripping portion 3 of the ATC arm 2; axially moving a main shaft on a plane orthogonal to a main shaft central line to inspect a variation in light receiving amount when an end surface 6a of the main shaft 6 is scanned by the inspection light of the fiber sensor 5 by an amplifier that is provided outside the apparatus; and centering the ATC arm 2 based on a coordinate of the main shaft 6 when a variation in light receiving amount is confirmed.
