[Also in Division D1] Brake actuating means 26, in a washing machine including an hydraulic transmission 14 arranged to selectively drive a fabric container 11 or an agitator 12 and a brake mechanism operatively connected to the fabric container, comprises means 128 to exert a predetermined force on the brake mechanism to hold the fabric container and fluid pressure responsive means to engage the brake mechanism with additional force when the agitator is being driven. As shown the washing machine comprises an electric motor 16 driving a wash water pump 17 and the rotor 38 of an hydraulic vane or other reversible pump 21, the casing 36 of which is secured for rotation with the fabric container 11. The brake mechanism further includes an expandible band 123 on the casing 36 which is actuated by a piston 120 of the means 26 and is engageable with a fixed housing 37. When the pump 21 is rotated counterclockwise fluid is drawn from a sump 28 through a port 44 and discharged to a line 47 to the sump which line is closed at a predetermined pressure by a valve 48 and then to a line 141 supplying through a port 131 the means 26 to move the piston 120 to the right to engage the brake harder and through a reversing valve 54 an oscillatory agitator motor 22 the exhaust from which is adjustably throttled by a rotary valve 23. An agitator by-pass and relief valve 24 is provided having a piston 90 which is movable to the right to intercommunicate the line 141 and a line 140 leading to the pump inlet 44. When the pump 21 is rotated clockwise pressure fluid is supplied to a port 130 of the means 26 to displace the piston 120 to the left and disengage the brake 123 and to an adjustable rotary spin control valve 25 which throttles the pump output thereby causing the casing 36 and the fabric container to rotate. |
