PURPOSE: An acousto-optic device having a wide diffraction angle, and an optical scanner, a light modulator and a display apparatus using the acousto-optic device are provided to increase the diffraction angle of output light by using anisotropic refraction. CONSTITUTION: A core layer(11) includes a periodic photonic crystal structure. The refractive indexes of a first and a second clad layer(12,13) are different from the refractive index of the core layer. A sound wave generator(14-16) supplies surface acoustic wave to the core layer, the first and the second clad layer which are made of acousto-optic materials.
