PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for reducing power consumption of a mobile station are provided to amplify the transmission power of a transmission signal by selectively using an operating amplifier and a power amplifier according to a transmission power level in a mobile station. CONSTITUTION: An external amplifier amplifies the output signal power of an operating amplifier. When a transmission power level of a transmission signal is lower than the maximum output level of an operating amplifier, a control unit(240) transmits a transmission signal amplified in the operating amplifier through an antenna to the outside. When the transmission power level of the transmission signal is higher than the maximum output level of the operating amplifier, the control unit transmits another transmission signal amplified in the external power amplifier through the antenna to the outside.
