Tufted carpets are produced by applying a thermally meltable adhesive on the lower side of a tufted product by contacting this lower side with an application roller for the adhesive, and then applying a fine gauge fabric to the coated lower side. During the contacting with the application roller, a definite pressure is exerised on the tufted product with the aid of at least one, pref. two pressure rollers arranged above the application rollers arranged above the application roller to contact the upper side of the tufted product, the free space between the pressure roller and the application roller being given by the formula: DELTA Rc = beta.ST/4.7 + 0.15 (where DELTA Rc= the free space in cm; S=the number of stitches per cm of the tufted product; T=the pile height in cm; and beta= a contact depending on the yarn used, which is 0.75 for nylon yarns 1.0 for polypropylene yarns, 1.5 for acrylic yarns, 1.0 for polyester yarns, of 1.5 for woollen yarns). The fine gauge fabric is contacted with the coated lower side of the tufted product immediately after this product leaves the application roller, and the tufted product is supported with the fine gauge fabric until the adhesive is cooled below the temp at which it adheres.
|
