The presence of water in refrigerant systems can have adverse effects such as chemical reaction with oil or refrigerant to form acidic materials, tars or varnishes, clogging of metering devices, lowering of the dielectric of the motor insulation causing motor failure, and enhancing the probability of copper plating. An indication of the amount of moisture present is given using cobaltous bromide on a fibrous mat or cellulose paper base which gives a reversible colour change from green to pink as it becomes saturated with water, thus indicating the degree of moisture present, but the colour change is rapid over a fairly narrow percentage range of moisture. The colour change can be varied by employing a dual salt system such as cobaltous acetate with another acetate salt, or pref. cobaltous bromide with zinc, cadmium or mercury bromide or cobaltous bromide with bromides of Ba or Mg (not claimed) to impregnate a cellulose paper base. By varying the ratio of one salt to another, and/or the ratio of the salt mixture to the paper base, colour changes in any desired moisture range, to suit the requirements of any refrigerant system can be achieved.
|
