Apparatus for printing or decorating the side walls of containers C, e.g. plastics bottles, vacuum formed oil cans and the like, comprises: a rotary mandrel drum 13 having a series of circumferentially spaced laterally projecting mandrels thereon mounted on each side of the drum (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown), in line with a rotary printing drum assembly 14 (Figs. 3, 13, 14 and 15, not shown) having offset printing blankets'such as 127 which are revolved past the mandrel drum 13 at a printing station S; a pair of supply conveyer assemblies 10, one each side of the apparatus (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), which deliver containers to a double star wheel pick-up train 11; a mandrel loading assembly 12 carrying cam-controlled pusher members 57 which follow the arcuate path of travel of the mandrels and at the same time move toward the mandrel drum to push containers endwise on to the mandrels upstream of the printing station S (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown), a pair of mandrel unloading stations 15 located downstream of the printing station S and carrying cam-controlled suction cups 170 for engaging the end walls of the containers, the cups following the arcuate path of the mandrels and remaining squared with the ends of the containers while pulling them off the mandrels; and a discharge conveyer assembly 16 which receives the containers from the. unloading stations 15. A valve assembly 188 is provided for selectively communicating vacuum and air pressure sources with each mandrel for aiding in drawing the containers on to the mandrels and removing them therefrom (Fig. 19, not shown) and associated with this assembly is a further mechanism which, if no container is on a particular mandrel, senses this condition and operates to remove the mandrel from the " print " position as it moves to the printing station (Figs. 9 to 12, not shown). Ink-supplying and blanket coating assemblies 131 to 134 apply different colours of ink to the leading ends of the printing blankets 127 and an assembly 135 applies a fast drying lacquer to the trailing ends thereof so that the ink applied may be immediately protected by the lacquer (Figs. 13 and 14, not shown). A drive motor gear-box assembly 204 is provided for driving the various operating elements of the apparatus. |
