Preparation of sulphonated (co)polymers by treating ethylenically unsaturated polymers with SO3 complexed with compounds of electro negative elements in anhydrous organic solvents at -20 to + 100 degrees C in the absence of humidity, air, and oxygen; the SO3 reacting with the unsaturated double bonds. The use of SO3 complexes greatly reduces degradation of the polymer. Polymers are useful as ion exchange resins, soil stabilisers, and as starting materials for ladder polymers and polyionomers. |
