Carbon deposits, which form in the anodic compartments of high temp. fuel cells, are removed by the intermittent injection of an oxidant, e.g. air restoring open circuit voltage to its original level. The anodes are made of an oxidation resistant material such as Ag, Pt, Pd or their alloys, nickel aluminide or nickel boride. Alternatively the oxidant concn. is kept low enough to ensure the presence of a reducing atmosphere in the anode compartment. In this case nickel anodes can be used. |
