1,245,734. Superconductor devices. FORD MOTOR CO. 26 Jan., 1970 [6 March, 1969], No. 3634/70. Heading H1K. A device comprises two metal members one having a flat surface and the other having a tapered end forming a small area contact with the flat surface, one of the members being of superconductive metal and the other being of normal or non-superconductive metal. The tapered end may be in the form of a point or a knife edge and the device is said to exhibit the AC Josephson effects and may be used for the detection or emission of electromagnetic radiation, the measurement of voltage or frequency or as a non-linear circuit element. The flat surface and the tapered end may be prepared by etching. The superconductive member may be Nb or Ta and the other member may be of Au, Ag, Pt, Cu, Ni or Fe. In two particular arrangements the tapered members are of Nb and Ta and the flat members are of Ni and Cu respectively.
