A mechanical device A for testing butt fusion beads B comprises a series of rollers C, metal discs E and an automatic split detections device (F, Fig 5). The rollers are connected to a winding mechanism D, and metal discs E exert pressure on the moving bead B, causing faulty joints to split. The split is detected by an automatic split detection device (F), which may include the use of electrical contact completing a circuit, or a light signal that is picked up by a receiver. The device A may be coupled to a data logging system, which combines the electrical signals with measured parameters, such as temperature, pressure and time, which are generated by the butt fusion machine. The combined data may be broadcast to a dedicated website for analysis. A method of joint testing is also disclosed, the method comprising the steps of removing a butt fusion bead B from a joint interface and bending the bead B using the mechanical device A. The bead B may be formed during butt fusion of polyolefin pipes. |
