A rack and pinion steering mechanism having the rack bar 6 supported opposite the pinion 1 by a semi-rigid plastics yoke 7 (e.g. of nylon, polyurethane, an acetal resin, or a polyester resin containing polyethylene terephthalate) which is biased by a spring 13 against the back of the rack bar, wherein the rack bar is basically cylindrical and engages a recess 8 in the yoke 7 along two lines of contact 26, 27, the main surfaces 8a; 8b of the recess 8 being generated by arcs having radii r1, r2 greater than the rack bar radius r and having their centres al, a2 laterally offset from the rack bar axis a. A lubricant channel 17 passes along the base of the recess 8. Shims 23 allow adjustment of the spring 13 preloading, the gap 24 between the yoke base and the casing being small enough to prevent the rack teeth 5 from coming out of mesh with the pinion 1. The outer end of the rack bar is supported in a tube (14) (Fig. 1, not shown) by a metal or plastics bush (18) having a lubricant channel (20) therethrough.</p> |
